Trope: The Call is Coming From Inside the House
Guest: Rebecca Lim
Book: The Graduate, Affirm Press, 2026
Rebecca Lim is an Australian writer, editor, and lawyer, and the author of over twenty books, including the multiple award-winning young adult novel Tiger Daughter. The Graduate is her first novel for adults.
Rebecca brought us the trope, ‘The Call Is Coming From Inside the House’, wherein a character believes they are in a safe place, only to find that the danger is much closer than they think. Examples of this trope include the films Halloween and Panic Room, and the book Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews.
She talks about her book The Graduate, a crime novel that follows Fei Fei Chou as she begins an entry level position at a major Australian law firm. However, Fei Fei is not like the other graduates – she is a survivor of a serial kidnapper and child abuser, and her goals don’t include career progression. She is there for information and she is there for revenge, and she will stop at nothing to get both.
